Cycling to Success

On the 17th & 18th July 2010, NEETA tutor Mark Sowerby took part in and succesfully completed the C2C Challenge. The Challenge, to cycle from Whitehaven to Sunderland required him to cover 140 miles in 2 days in support of the RNLI.

Mark left Whitehaven at 11am on Saturday 17th July and set off across the Lakes. Day 1 involved negotiating a climb to 580m above sea level at Hartside.

Mark arrived in Alston at around 9:30pm where he set up camp for the night. Rising early at 6am, Mark was back on the road at 8am heading toward Black Hill, which at 609m above sea level would be the highest point on the journey.

Mark then made his way down through Consett and on to the finishing line at Sunderland at around 5pm where he was greeted by friends and family.

Mark raised £130 to support the RNLI and was understandably exhausted on completing his challenge. Mark would like to thank those sponsors for their support and he hopes to complete the challenge again in the future.

Bryony Watson met celebrity hairdresser Patrick Cameron when she represented Gateshead in the finals of the Young Apprentice of the year event, at a sparkling ceremony in London this week.

The competition sponsored by the Hair and Beauty Industry Authority (HABIA) commenced at the Skills Academy in Gateshead and required Young Apprentices to choose a design and create a mood board to reflect the image they wanted to portray; they then had to style a long hair mannequin head reflecting the look. Finally they had to produce a personal statement about their experiences and the challenges they found in the styling and how they overcame them. Out of 22 entrants, independent judges picked Bryony as the winner and entrant to the National stage.
Bryony's mood board, personal statement and photographs of her mannequin were sent to HABIA in Doncaster for judging.

Entries from all over the UK were received, from the northern Scottish isles to Jersey and judges declared that this year's entries were very strong showing close relation in all competition component parts and excellent problem solving skills.
Everyone was delighted when Bryony's entry was successful in being selected as one of the final 12, a fantastic achievement which required her to go to London for the celebration event.
Accompanied by her family and training provider Susan Briganti from Neeta Ltd, Bryony travelled to London for the event which included a hair show from the HABIA skills team and International platform hairdresser Patrick Cameron. Although Bryony was not the National winner her achievement in getting to the finals is no small feat.
Presenting Bryony with her certificates, Patrick Cameron told the audience that the skills shown by the finalists exceeded those held by many "professional " stylists and spoke about the industry as a billion pound sector with opportunities for travel and fame.
Erik Lander, HABIA skills team leader and compere for the evening, added that Hairdressing and teachers in Hairdressing appear in the top five skills required for emigration to Australia.
Parents and young people attending the event were all impressed by the professionalism of the industry and the opportunities presented.
After the event Bryony celebrated with a meal out in London, some retail therapy and sightseeing.
Bryony commented "When is the next competition? Bring it on!"
I think we should all look out for Bryony Scissorhands?

Get Up & Go 2010-A Success!

Get Up & Go is an national event held annually and coordinated locally by Connexions Gateshead. The 2010 event was held at the prestigious Gateshead Skills Academy on Friday 5th February between 9am & 4pm and on Saturday 6th February between 10am & 3pm. Gateshead Skills Academy is home to the Gateshead Collective a consortium of leading Work Based Learning providers of which NEETA Ltd is a founder member.

On Friday 5th February, Get up and Go 2010 got underway. All schools in the Gateshead borough were invited to send along pupils from years 10 & 11. Buses were provided by "The Collective" to bring pupils from their school to the Skills Academy and then back again. Different schools gave different levels of support to the day, but on the whole, attendance was good and more than 350 pupils were welcomed over the course of the day.

As well as NEETA Ltd, providers at the event included; Gateshead Council; Gateshead College; Access; Itec; Zodiac; TDR; Resources; Rainbow Training; Rathbone and Future Strategies covering a vast spectrum of Apprenticeship opportunites.
In addition, representatives came from The National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) and Connexions to offer independent advice and guidance to all.

Get up & Go also welcomed a special guest. Local Labour MP Dave Anderson to the event. Mr Anderson, who undertook an Apprenticeship after leaving school, took time from his busy schedule to visit all of the providers at the event and also spoke to some of the pupils to see what they thought.
Mr Anderson said "Events such as this are extremely important in ensuring our young people are fully informed about the many options available to them after leaving school.

"Apprenticeships and work-based learning provide a great opportunity to study and gain experience and skills at the same time. They offer a very direct route into employment and employers are increasingly recognising the benefits they get from hiring apprentices."

On Saturday 6th February, Get up & Go opened its doors and everyone was welcome to come and view the facilities on offer at the Skills Academy and learn more about options available. Connexions sent out literature to every year 10, 11, 12 & 13 students in Gateshead, inviting them to attend the Saturday event. There was advertising on local Radio and Press, however, the attendance was down on last year.

Across the 2 days we received alot of very positive feedback. By completing an event evaluation form, attendees were entered into a prize draw. 2 lucky winners each received a Netbook supplied by the Gateshead Collective.

On achieving Gold status, Managing Director Susan Briganti said "Gaining the Investors In People Gold award means a great deal to both myself and our business". " I have always placed great importance on the development and well being of our staff as I believe they are our greatest asset."
Employer Announcement-Training Allowance increase

In September 2008, the government announced that on the 1st August 2009 the minimum training allowance for employed apprentices would increase from £80 to £95 per week.

All Apprentices aged 16-18, and those aged 19 and over in their first year as an apprentice are exempt from being paid the national minimum wage. The minimum training allowance ensures the apprentice receives a package equitable to being in full time education or unwaged training.

We wrote to all of our employers in April 2009 to remind them of the impending change which, as announced, came into effect on the 1st August 2009.

Flexible Curriculum is a programme for 14 to 16 year olds.

For a wide variety of reasons, sometimes young people fail to respond to the programme of learning offered in secondary education. This programme of learning provides young people with the opportunity to try other areas of learning such as vocational skills, enterprise, citizenship and work skills.

This programme is usually 20 hours per week but may be shorter if the young person is also attending school for some lessons.

Beauty Therapy

Beauty
Beauty is a service industry providing personal grooming and cosmetic services to men and women. You will meet new people every day and will require energy and enthusiasm. Beauty is a personal service and you will need to be discreet and respectful.

Apprenticeship in Beauty
A beauty Apprenticeship covers all the basic skills that you need to become a professional therapist. A key element of the Apprenticeship is the employment and or support of an employer.

Who is it suitable for?
An apprenticeship in beauty is suitable for someone who is confident, creative and enjoys meeting new people. Having a keen interest in make up is key as cosmetics lead the industry. It is also important that you are well presented and take pride in your appearance.
Beauticians spend a lot of time on their feet and bending so you will need lots of stamina and be able to stand for long periods of time. Your working hours will vary and almost always include some weekend work and late nights so you will need to be flexible and comfortable in an ever changing environment.

What types of opportunities are there?
A career in hairdressing can provide opportunities in theatre, tv and film, it can include working with platform artists, photographers, models and actors. You may wish to travel and work on cruise ships or in hotels across the world.
You may want to consider sales, technical support or marketing, perhaps through a hairdressing product manufacturer.
Styling takes place in small local independent salons, large national and international chains, franchise salons, hospitals and care homes and also freelance or mobile businesses.

What can I earn?
An employed apprentice must receive a minimum of £95 per week. Once employed average salaries will be around £16,000 per annum, but the sky's the limit.

If you don't become employed straight away you may be entitled to Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) we can help you apply for this.

How will I learn?
Every Apprentice has an individually agree learning programme that takes account of your preferred learning style (do you like projects or working electronically, are you a practical, visual learner etc) and to meet the needs of your employer.
Each apprentice has a named tutor who will meet with you to deliver knowledge and practical skill development, this may be in one of our centres in a small group, at your place of work in a small groups or one to one in a suitable environment.
You will also be provided with the means to access learning on line which will enable you to study, revise and progress at your own pace.
Some apprentices require extra, specialist support for maths, ICT or communication and we provide additional tutors to help with this in a way that meets your needs.
All apprentices must have at least 6 hours a week to work towards their qualifications; this may take place at one of our training centres or at the employer's premises.

We do not work with employers who are not fully committed to supporting your learning and development.

How long does the Apprenticeship programme last?
This is agreed with you and recorded on your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which is developed with you after carrying out some initial assessment.
It is generally expected that an apprenticeship will take 18 months to 2 years and the Advanced level a further year, however many Apprentices complete in much less time and depends often upon the amount of practise and experience you receive from your employer.

What is the difference between Apprenticeship and Advanced Apprentice?
Most learners enter as a 16 or 17 year old and begin as an Apprentice, this means they are a salon junior and develop a broad range of hairdressing skills to achieve a competent level of performance, a bit like learning to drive, as you gain skills you practise and become more confident.

As an apprentice you will be targeted to achieve:
•	NVQ Level 2
•	Functional skills in Communication level 1
•	Functional skills in Maths level 1
•	Functional skills in ICT level 1
•	Knowledge of Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
•	Acknowledged for Personal Learning and Thinking skills

About 40% of learners who achieve apprenticeship standard go on to the advanced level and are targeted to achieve:

•	NVQ Level 3
•	Functional skills in Communication level 2
•	Functional skills in Maths level 2
•	Functional skills in ICT level 2
•	Knowledge of Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
•	Acknowledged for Personal Learning and Thinking skills

At this level your skills have developed to enable you to be creative and design styles and to demonstrate supervisory skills and financial awareness. You can choose optional units to develop specialist areas such as colour correction or long hair work.

What happens after completion?
Continued employment
You are likely to remain in employment with the employer who supported your training.
Secure employment elsewhere
You may feel you want to be employed in another salon or type of salon, your qualifications as an apprentice will put you in a good position to do this.
Further training
Your apprenticeship can lead to further training such a university or specialist area.

Nicola's story

I did not really enjoy school but was pleased enough to get 8 respectable GCSEs. My maths teacher said I would be stupid to go into hairdressing and he even stopped speaking to me during my last term at school, but having had a Saturday job in a salon,
I knew this was the career for me.

I was offered an apprenticeship by the salon and they sent me to Neeta Ltd to gain my NVQ in hairdressing. After acheiving my advanced apprenticeship and gaining further
experience in the sector I began to support other apprentices as a trainer/assessor and enjoyed being able to pass on my skills and help others gain qualifications.

In 2006 I was recognised as Licentiate member of City and Guilds at a cap and gown ceremony held in London in front of hundreds of people.

Whilst I found teaching and assessing very rewarding, I felt that I was losing touch with the commercial side of the industry and decided to open my own business and I am
now the proud owner of a fabulous business in Newcastle and employer of six staff of whom two are apprentices in hairdressing and one is an apprentice in beauty and they are being trained by 1st Degree Training, the apprenticeship arm of Neeta Ltd.

I wish my maths teacher could see me now!
