A group of students from Cedars Academy were given a start up fund of £50 from training provider Neeta Ltd as part of a project to develop life and work skills.
The students aged 14 have a range of disabilities which can limit opportunities for them when entering the world of work so to help this they attend Neeta Ltd at the Gateshead Skills Academy on the Team Valley one day per week as part of their studies and are working towards a City and Guild award in Enterprise.
The students were tasked with identifying a product or activity which would be commercially attractive and would generate a profit. They choose to design, make and sell Christmas cards.
It was no mean feat, the students had to form a management group and carry out research and complete marketing activities. Using the “Dragons Den” format an investor was sought and Neeta’s managing director Susan Briganti invested £50 to the group.
Tutor Diane James guided the group to research the activity to source its products and to identify which charity it wished to support.
On Friday 29th November 2013 the first batch of cards went on sale at the Skills Academy generating a gross income of £149. Sales will continue next week through Cedars school and are expected to bring the total to over £200 gross, all of which will be donated to The Macmillan Cancer trust.
Head teacher at Cedars, Jane Fraser, is delighted with the project and said “ I couldn’t be more pleased or proud of the superb project these young people have begun. This will give them a real taste of Enterprise which is an insight into the world of work. I am also so happy at their choice of charity”.
